  Text: Construida por Seleuco Nikator, el primer rey de los Seléucidas en Siria en el 300 a.d.C.. En la era cristiana Apamea se convirtió en un centro de filosofía y pensamiento. La mayoría de las ruinas al descubierto datan de la época romana y bizantina. Se distingue por sus altas murallas y la vía principal de 2 kilómetros (“Cardo”) rodeada de columnas con estriado trenzado.
  Built by Saluqos Nikator, the first king of the Seleucids in Syria in 300 B.C.. Apamea became a center of philosophy and thought. Most of the uncovered ruins in it date back to the Roman and Byzantine ages. It is distinguished for its high walls and the 2 kilometers main thoroughfare (“Cardo”) surrounded by columns with twisted fluting.

  In the Christian era, Apamea became a center of philosophy and thought. Most of the uncovered ruins in it date back to the Roman and Byzantine ages. It is distinguished for its high walls and the 2 kilometers main thoroughfare (“Cardo”) surrounded by columns with twisted fluting.

Basilica of St. Simeon - Syria

  Text: San Simeón el Estilita era un monje que en el s. V se encadenó en lo alto de una columna (aproximadamente a 20 metros) durante 38 años para estar más cerca de Dios. Predicaba allí y daba consejo a los peregrinos (excepto a las mujeres, que tenían prohibida la entrada incluida su madre).
  St. Simeon Stylites was a monk who in the 5th century chained himself in the top of a column (about 20 meters) for 38 years. His primary purpose being was to get closer to God. He preached there and offer advice to pilgrims (except women, whose entrance was forbidden,including his mother).

  Text: Tras la muerte de San Simeón en el 459 d.d.C. se construyó en su honor la iglesia más grande de la época, a 60 kms. al norte de Aleppo, el complejo está formado por un monasterio, un baptisterio con los propileos de una iglesia adyacente y una característica iglesia de mártires que consiste en 4 basílicas unidas alrededor de un área semioctogonal en forma de cruz griega.
  After St. Simeon death in 459 AD the largest church at that time was built in his honour 60 km north of Aleppo. The complex is made up of a monastery, a baptistery with an adjacent church propylaea and a distinctive church or martyrion, with a Greek cross.

  Text: El complejo monacal está formado por un monasterio, un baptisterio con los propileos de una iglesia adyacente y una característica iglesia de mártires que consiste en 4 basílicas unidas alrededor de un área semioctogonal en forma de cruz griega.
  The complex is made up of a monastery, a baptistery with an adjacent church propylaea and a distinctive church or martyrion, which consists of 4 basilicas coupled around a mid octagonal area in the form of a Greek cross.

  Text: Son estructuras cónicas de ladrillos de barro encaladas con una sola puerta y sin ventanas que conservan una temperatura constante ante el calor y el frío. Las encontramos al este de Aleppo, en las polvorientas llanuras en dirección al Eufrates, y en las zonas áridas al este de Hama, en pueblos como Sarouj y Twalid Dabaghein, donde todavía están habitadas.
  They are conical structures of mud whitewashed with an only door and withouth windows, which mantein a constant temperature when it is hot or it is cold. We can find them to the east of Aleppo, in the dusty plains towards Euphrates, and in the arid areas to the east of Hama, still inhabited in villages like Sarouj y Twalid Dabaghein.

  Beit Aqqad, one of the ancient damascene houses and the most impressive, is occupied by the Danish Institute since 1996. It was owned by Aqqad family, rich textile merchants, in 19th century.
